The Symbolic Avatar protest
Anyone who thinks protests are uninspired and rowdy affairs that make little headlines or worldwide notice should note the ingenuity of Palestinian demonstrators. Combining the symbolism of indigenous preservation against Western imperialism; as well as the maverick timeliness of the Hollywood blockbuster, Avatar, some demonstrators have painted themselves blue (and dressed up like Navi's) to protest against Israel's Separation Wall (more after the jump).
Implicit in this theatrical protest lies the contested ownership claim of land and resources. Much like the movie Avatar, Palestinians are up against the state of Israel, which has, at its disposal, some of the world's most advanced military technologies abetted and supported by the imperialist western power, US. Its military prowess was demonstrated in front of a world audience through theĀ internet technologies and 24 hour mass media television news stations when Israel lodged its attack against Lebanon in 2006 and then again in Gaza in 2008/9. Unmanned drones, white phosphorous, indiscriminate attacks against civilians, including bombing UN compounds shocked the international community to denounce its strong- arm and illegal war tactics, further alienating impartial observers.
The parallels with the movie have been harnessed to a great spectacle that will resonate with many. On one side are the Navi's/ indigenous population/ Palestinians who are struggling against an invasion/Occupation of Palestinian Territories by a military power (US/ West/ Israel). The tool of struggle against the powers for Palestinians have been non-violent campaigns such as the boycott of Israel's products and services and peaceful demonstrations though it has also resorted to home- made rocket retaliation when push comes to shove. The military imperialists have, on their side, a strong arsenal of deadly ammunition.
The outcome of this protracted struggle however, is unlikely to be a test of military attack and retaliation. The opinion of the international community will change the tide of this conflict. And just like the flick, the audience/world community will root for the Navi's/ Palestinians, even though the latter remains a strange, perhaps exotic culture to most of their Western-influenced outlook.
We know this because our love and sense of justice is historically ingrained in our DNA. Just as the film-goers of Avatar will scream for victory towards the end and weep with joy at the deportation of the attackers, the world community will do the same for Palestinians when their time come and Israel relinquishes its occupier status.
