Cubbie Station in Queensland has long been accused being a significant reason of why the Murray-Darling system is under such stress. The station has a size of 93000 hectares and it is allowed to divert and store up to 500000 megalitres from the Murray-Darling system. Reports today indicate that the station is now up for sale - with a price approaching half a billion dollars. I was listening to ABC radio this morning and the story was saying that the water permits and land titles cannot be separated - which is what has happened with other major water users. If - as seems the case - that the station is one of the causes of the problems in the Murray-Darling system, should government buy the station to help the water system? |
