Min @18, could it be wishful thinking or maybe Miglo's secret WCP mantra?

Caney, every so often the rumour mill swirls around Dolly and his next dazzling career move. State politics has been mentioned, also a crack at mayor of Adelaide. We await his next pronouncement with breathless anticipation.

However, I reckon it was another Lib being touted for NSW some time ago. Unfortunately, the name escapes me. - jane

Jane, all this agreeing will have to stop or else it will give the blog a bad name ;)

Agreed, no and neither will there ever again be a minister of the church ever given the job again. Hollingworth must have been the most disgraceful GG ever appointed. - Min

joni @10, please tell me it's been swanning about in Paris, London and Florence. :D

Min @12, agree. You've got it in a nutshell as usual.

I think Australia is well past having a minor, or even major, royal as G-G. We've become accustomed to providing home grown G-Gs and with the possible exception of those royal butt-lickers Abbott, Bronnie, Pyne et al, I don't think any federal government would consider an import these days. - jane

Joni, if I was Turnbull I would be looking very carefully at the job description before taking on the role of President, as after all one could end up as just a mere figurehead with no actual power. - Min

A little off topic, but I agree with Turnbull at: http://news.theage.com.au/breaking-news-national/william-wont-change-rep-issue-turnbull-20100122-mp5y.html
"William may be as charming a king as he is a prince, but he can never represent Australia in the way that he will represent his own country."
I agree, William will one day become our King and our Head of State but has managed a bare 5 days to acquaint himself with his future subjects in Australia and NZ. I should imagine that Wills has spent more time ski-ing the Austrian alps than the time that he spent learning about his future subjects. - Min

Jane, I tend to agree. Turnbull has shown himself to be an opportunist who considers that there are easy options (Gretch) to political problems..who has shown himself to not have been in politics to make Australia a better place but as a showcase for his own talents. At least these were the impressions...mind you, there was a lot of undermining from the Costello camp.

Turnbull's first mistake was to not make a clean sweep of the front bench. Mistake #2, as above thinking that there were easy solutions. Mistake #3, underestimating the enemy aka Rudd and crew. Rudd didn't become PM by being a bookish nerd irregardless of what the Oz might have you believe. Mistake #4, expecting that loyalty was a foregone conclusion having obtained the top job in the LP. - Min

Turnbull (like Rudd et al) is only interested in the big picture stuff. Not a chance he would be a contender for a second rate position in the power and prestige stakes. His eyes are still on the main prize - as he should be. - Nature 5

Why would Turnbull make a better fist of leader of the Liberal party at state level than he did at the federal level?

He was an abject failure as leader of the opposition and I doubt he's any less of a boofhead now than he was then, or that he has any more political nous or integrity.

This is still the same bloke of debt truck fame and the stench of Godwin Gretch and false emails about him. Being stabbed in the back has not absolved him of that or made him a golden boy, at least not as far as I'm concerned.

As for loyalty, he was only too happy to hang Erica out to dry and, if my memory serves me correctly, the same bloke who, after being sprung telling porkies about his involvement in the email scandal, absolutely refused to apologise to Rudd or Swan having accused them of lying to parliament.

The man is an albatross and if he did have a crack at NSW premier, Labour would be subtly reminding the voters of his glorious track record as leader of the opposition at every turn. They might even wheel out Godwin Gretch as a character witness.

Joni, hubby and I used to share a glass of wine or 2 with Doug and the Missus at the beach at New Brighton.

One of the oddest things at the last election, how little support was given to the younger Larry (seat of Richmond). - Min

Federally I have the most splendiferous Justine Elliot. Former police officer and long term worker for kids off the streets. Not a clue as to her opposite number which says something given that former reps were Nats Larry/Doug/Larry Anthony. - Min

Oh indeed, but i more hope that he creates a new party. Then I might be tempted to vote for his party. Alas, I am not in his electorate... the fish in my one are much smaller. - joni
